Below is a jobs to be done template for job mapping with a free blank template at the bottom.

Simple Market example: 

Automobile purchasers trying to purchase a new automobile from an auto dealership.

Customer category: purchase deciders

Job to be done: purchase a new automobile

Context description: from an auto dealership

Customer journey maps consist of eight job steps. Each job step is written in the following format.

(verb) + (subject of verb) + (context description)

Step 1: Define goals for vehicle purchase.

  • Purchase deciders set the goals they want to achieve with the purchase of their vehicle. Such as determining whether to purchase a sport utility vehicle or sports car.

    • Anticipated outcome: reduce the chances of failing to align vehicle acquisition and life goals.

Step 2: Locate vehicle brand that will achieve goals.

  • Purchase deciders conduct research and select a brand of vehicles.

    • Anticipated outcome: reduce the chances of being misinformed.

Step 3: Prepare for vehicle purchase decision.

  • Once a brand is selected. Purchase deciders determine which model and trim level will help them best achieve their acquisition goals. 

    • Anticipated outcome: Reduce the chances of failing to meet vehicle acquisition goals.

Step 4: Confirm selected vehicle variation.

  • Confirm that the selected brand, model and trim level will achieve the goals set in the define stage.

    • Anticipated outcome: reduce the chances of selecting a problematic vehicle variation.

Step 5: Execute vehicle purchase.

  • Select desired vehicle stock number from dealership inventory.

    • Anticipated outcomes: reduce the time it takes to select a vehicle from dealership inventory.

Step 6: Monitor vehicle expectations.

  • Inspect selected vehicle in dealership inventory and ensure that offering meets expectations.

    • Anticipated outcome: reduce the chances of failing to meet vehicle acquisition goals.

Step 7: Modify purchase options.

  • Determine the purchasing method and negotiate financing if not purchased outright.

    • Anticipated outcome: reduce the cost of financing.

Step 8: Vehicle sale concludes.

  • Purchase decider takes delivery of their new vehicle.

    • Anticipated outcome: reduce the time it takes for vehicle delivery.
